Two new pieces of equipment
are making difficult cases easier to diagnose and manage.
An ultrasound machine allows
for ultrasonic imaging similar to that used in human pregnancies. Most
internal organs, such as the liver, kidneys, bladder, and spleen are
readily visible - not only the outer dimensions, but the internal
structures as well. The machine has been used to diagnose cysts,
heart disease, tumors, organ disease, bladder and kidney stones, and
pregnancy in small animals. Guided biopsies are also available and
are a much safer means to obtain tissue samples than exploratory surgery.
The video scope is
similar to an endoscope which allows for magnification and improved
visibility. The most common use will be in evaluating ear problems.
With this scope, the entire ear canal can be seen - all the way to the
eardrum! Accessories provide the ability to thoroughly clean the
ear, remove foreign material (such as hair and debris), and obtain samples
for culture or biopsy. It can even print or store images for future
comparison. |
